The practice of dentistry has evolved and developed rapidly in the twenty first century with new or interdisciplinary disciplines emerging in the fields of dentistry such as oral implantology or implant dentistry. Implantology has helped millions of people worldwide who are without teeth to enjoy their food once again with the advent of placing implants intraorally. Furthermore, the use of prostheses on the face extraorally to correct facial deformities and improve aesthetic outcome has made this discipline become a highly sophisticated healthcare specialty in dentistry as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Nowadays, edentulous patients not only want good function and aesthetics but also would like to have the feeling of real teeth. This is made possible with implant supported prostheses utilizing modern technology and new materials available. Therefore, general dental practitioners and specialists alike have to stay current by either getting credentials or through continuing professional education by taking a course and/or going to one or two conferences a year in order to update their skills and knowledge. With this in mind, the Malaysian Oral Implant Association (MOIA) was founded and officially gazetted on 29th September 2004 with the Registrar of Societies, Malaysia.
Tribute must be paid to the 10 Founding Members of MOIA for its formation: 1) Professor Dr. Michael Ong Ah Hup 2) Dr. Firdaus Hanapiah 3) Dr. How Kim Chuan 4) Dr. Ng Ben Chuan 5) Datuk Dr. Teo Choo Kum 6) Dato’ Dr. Philip Ting 7) Dr. Baduizaman Bin Mohd Salleh 8) Dr. Anthony Tan 9) Dr. Roland Chia 10) Dr. Chew Eng Hai
The present MOIA’s Constitution was officially drawn up with the noble objectives of achieving and promoting excellence in the field of oral implantology. The Association became affiliated to the Malaysian Dental Association (MDA) in 2004 and to the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) U.S.A. in 2005. Our affiliation and participations in conferences both locally and overseas have made the MOIA gained wider recognition and credibility in the international arena.
As a Founder President of MOIA, I would like to congratulate and thank all members for the time, great effort and kind cooperation in drawing up its Constitution, thus making it a reality and also for their ongoing contribution to the success of MOIA since its inception. Lastly, I have taken the initiative to have MOIA’s Constitution book printed so that this first print can be used as an easy reference and a source of information for all members. My best wishes to all in the future undertakings of this Association. Professor Dr. Michael Ong Ah Hup Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon
