Job Description

Maintenance Supervisor Position

The City of Lebo is a vibrant, close-knit community located in Coffey County, Kansas. As a city, we're dedicated to maintaining a safe, clean, and efficient environment for our residents through responsive governance and well-maintained infrastructure. We take pride in our commitment to public service, small-town values, and continuous improvement in the services we provide.

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Maintenance Supervisor located in Lebo, KS. The Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing daily operations, infrastructure maintenance, and staff management across multiple areas - primarily water and wastewater systems, streets, parks, and stormwater drainage.

This is a hands-on role that requires strong technical knowledge, leadership skills, and the ability to operate and oversee the use of large equipment such as backhoes, skid steers, and dump trucks. The supervisor will work closely with the City Clerk and Council to ensure that all public works operations align with annual and long-term goals.

The person in this role must be able to work within a fixed municipal budget, which requires looking ahead. Because a City's budget for the next year is finalized each June and July, this position plays a critical role in forecasting future equipment, maintenance, staffing, and material needs well in advance.

As a city maintenance employee, the supervisor is expected to respond to emergency calls after hours, including water main breaks, lift station alarms, and other urgent infrastructure issues. Residency within 20 minutes of Lebo is required, with a strong preference for candidates who live or would move within the city limits.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and assist with water and wastewater system maintenance
  • Lead street repairs, culvert replacements, and snow/ice removal
  • Operate and train others on large equipment, including backhoes, dump trucks, and skid steers
  • Maintain parks, swimming pool, public building, signage, and city property
  • Schedule and perform utility locates and inspections
  • Respond to after-hours emergency calls and infrastructure issues
  • Maintain inventory, safety compliance, and equipment records
  • Coordinate with city staff to plan for future needs and work within the annual budget
  • Attend monthly City Council meetings to report on department activities
  • Attend continuing education and certification training

Qualifications

  • Experience in public works, utilities, construction, or related fields.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment
  • Ability to work independently and manage staff
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and planning skills
  • Willingness to respond to emergencies on weekends or after hours
  • Valid Kansas Driver's License
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate's degree in related field is a plus
  • Certifications in water/wastewater operations preferred

Compensation

  • Hourly Wage: $22 - $26 /hour (based on experience and qualifications)
  • Benefits: Health insurance, paid time off, KPERS retirement
